These photographs developed out of a meditation on winter. I became fascinated by the action of snow and ice as shape-builders and light-carriers. Even the briefest snowfall, sudden freeze, or rise in temperature rearranged the city’s landscape for my camera, by sculpting ordinary objects into new shapes, by illuminating others with a different light. I saw these shifts unfold in the daily round of Montreal during the winter of 2004, and recorded in my photographs some idea of this process, its immense radiance. Judith Castle
